Craps is a popular dice game played in casinos that is a simplified version of an Old English game called "Hazard".
From Hazard to Craps
The rules of the game Hazard were established by French mathematician Pierre Remond de Montmort in the early 1700s. Mentioned often by the author Chaucer in the Canterbury Tales, The Hazard game became a hugely popular English game and seems to be the forerunner of the game craps and became a popular game in 17th century gambling houses.
The origin of Craps is disputed but may possibly date back to the time of the Crusades and the Holy Roman Empire when soldiers would entertain themselves by shaving down pig knuckles into cube shapes which they would toss onto their inverted shields. From this came the term "to roll the bones". Gamblers in France later influenced the game further and the game was further popularised around 1813 by Bernard de Marigny of New Orleans where he introduced tha game. The revised game of Hazard, then known as Crapaud and then as Craps soon became popular in Mississippi river steamboats and later spread to casinos and gambling halls throughout the country. By 1910, craps had become the most popular casino game in the world.
Craps Popularity and Bernard de Marigny
Eventually, the game was brought to New Orleans by a certain Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville (commonly known as Bernard de Marigny), who was a spoilt child of wealthy Louisiana landowners, an eventual gambler and known politician who became President of the Louisiana Senate between 1822-23 but succeeded no further in his political ambitions due to his eccentric and selfish ways.
The Craps game became very popular in New Orleans where the French Creole, African American people popularized it. Known as "Crapaud" which is the French word for frog or toad, there are a few theories why the name was given to this game. One interesting fact is that the word "Crapaud" was a derogatory and insulting term used by the English speaking residents of Louisiana to generally describe the French Creole people and because they loved the game, the name of "Crapaud" stuck; another theory states that the French Creole people, looking very hunche-backed whilst playing the game, brought on the term.
Unfortunately, we haven't read that there is a third theory which combines the two first mentioned theories. The fact, for example, that the French Creole were hunch-backed whilst playing this popular game, came to lead others to call them toads as they concentrated over the Craps game. From thereon, one would imagine, that seeing so many people always hunch-back and gambling so much, actually encouraged others to relate the image of them to a toad and that perhaps the perceived distastefulness of the act of gambling encouraged them to do so in distaste. It almost seems like a classic example of 'which came first, the chicken or the egg'. Well, even if we can't decide, Craps did.
In all eccentric manner, Bernard de Marigny eventually named one of the streets of his New orleans development, Faubourg Marigny, as "Craps".
Playing Craps
In the game of Craps, players wager money against the casino on the outcome of one roll, or of a series of rolls of two dice. Craps is also played privately and is said to be popular among soldiers and other lay persons. Side bets are more frequently made during these private games, with one or several participants covering or "fading" bets against the dice.
Casino Etiquette for Craps
Here are some etiquette guidelines useful to know when playing Craps.
Despite the fact that the number 7 is a winner on the come-out roll, it shouldn't really be mentioned during the game. Why? Because Craps layers seem yo be a very superstitious lot (probably having originated from New Orleans) so you should always refer to 7 as "red" or "big red."
Keep your hands away from the layout when you see the stickman push the dice to the shooter. Dealers will warn you saying - "hands high"; meaning "keep those hands off the table, you fool!". If the dice happens to hit your hand and a 7-out is rolled, you'll get some pretty bad vibes from everyone around the tabl
Don't put chips spontaneously on the layout and and try not to give betting instructions to the dealer in an unordered manner - you should wait your turn as the Dealer serves everyone at the table in the order that he's implemented.
Don't take up too much space at the table - it's inconsiderate to other players who want to join the game or simply enjoy it themselves.
Always tip the courteous and efficient dealers. By telling the Dealer nice words like 'Give me a 2-way", you're actually telling him that one chip's value is for him and the crew and the other one is meant for you. Sharing and gratitude for good service is always recommended.
