The La Bouchere System

The La Bouchere System, also called the 'Labouchere', "Crossout", "Cancellation", "Labby" or "Split Martingale" system is a negative progression system.

This system is particularly dangerous and is not recommended. It involves using a set range of numbers (the range will naturally depend on the type of game being played and the odds involved), with each individual number corresponding to a particular bet unit.

The real drawback to the Labouchere betting method is that if you keep losing, you have to keep betting more and more to stay in the series (and get your losses back). This requires a large bankroll in case you lose.

This gambling system has many variations and in its simplest form, you write down a series or a set of numbers; say, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. The series can be short or long and does not necessarily have to be sequential. Depending on the type of game you are playing and the odds being bet, a particular series would be have to be thought out and applied.

Each number represents the amount in units or chips to bet. You bet the first and last of these numbers. In this example 1 and 5, which totals 6 units.

If you win, you cross out the two numbers and bet the next two 'ends' (the outside numbers). These would be the 4 and 7. If you win again you bet on the next two remaining numbers which are 4 and 4. If you also win he last two remaining numbers, you would have made a 'coup' or completed one game. Then you start all over again.

If you lose, then you will add that one number to the end of the series. For example, you lost the first bet of 7 units (1+6). Then you would add the number 7 to the end of the series (ie: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7) and your next bet would then be 8 units (1+7). Now, if you won the first bet but you lost the second 2 and 5 , then this is what the series would look like: 2 3 4 5 7.

If you calculate this, you will see that when the series is completed or when you make a 'coup', there is always a profit. The negative side of this system is that you could end up betting large sums of money even if your initial bet is small.

The Reverse Labouchere System

The Labouchere System in reverse is a positive progression betting system. Add winnings to the sequence instead of losses. If you win, add one number (the winning units) to the end of the series. If you lose, delete the two outside numbers. Put an appropriate target of, say, 20 units profit for 'even money' bets (less for higher odds), and when reached begin another sequence. Sequence commencement is 1,2,3,4 so you risk only 10 units per sequence.
