Game Objective
The objective of Chinese Poker is to arrange a set of hands that will beat the corresponding hands of the other players. There are often several possible ways to arrange the thirteen cards given to you and the only rules you have to follow are that the back hand must be of a higher value than the middle hand, and the middle hand must be higher than the front hand. The value of each hand is determined by standard poker rules. The front hand, with only three cards, cannot have a flush or straight.
Players, Cards, Stakes and Dealing
In Chinese Poker, a standard 52 card pack is used. There are four players who play solely for themselves.
A stake is agreed upon before playing. The cards are shuffled, cut and dealt out singly and 13 cards are dealt to each player.
Card Arrangement
Each player divides his/her 13 cards into a "back" hand of 5 cards, a "middle" hand of 5 cards and a "front" hand of 3 cards. The back hand must be considered better than the middle hand, and the middle hand must be considered better than the front hand.
The standard poker ranking is used (such as is outlined in Texas Hold Em). The hand types from high to low are royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pairs, one pair, high card. There are no wild cards in Chinese Poker.
Only three hand types are possible in the front hand as it has only 3 cards; these are three of a kind; one pair and high card. "Straights" or "flushes" in the front hand do not count.
The players place their three hands face down in front of them, the front hand nearest the centre of the table and the back hand nearest to themselves.
Exposing The Hands and Scoring
When the players have finished arranging their hands, all the players then expose their three hands and each pair of players compares the corresponding hands.
Though there are other methods of payments, the simplest system of payment will win you one unit for each corresponding hand of another player that you beat and you lose one unit for each hand that beats you. When the hands are equal you neither win nor lose.
Special Systems of Payment and Scoring
In other systems of unit counting, many players add two further features to the stake, which are increased payments for certain hands, and some special 13-card hands that win automatically. The players must agree in advance exactly which payments and unit counts are allowed in the game.
A typical scale of increased payments is as follows:
Three of a kind in the front hand will get you 3 units instead of 1 for that hand.
A full house in the middle hand will get you 2 units instead of 1 for that hand.
4 of a kind in the back or middle hand will get you 4 units instead of 1.
A royal flush or straight flush in the back or middle hand will win you 5 units instead of 1.
